UP Catalyst utilises CO₂ emissions as a feedstock, replacing fossil-based resources. For each ton of carbon materials produced, UP Catalyst utilises 3.7 tons of CO₂.
Conventional synthetic graphite is typically produced using petroleum coke, a byproduct of crude oil refining, or pitch coke, which is derived from toxic coal tar.
Emissions from fossil fuels are not part of the biogenic carbon cycle. It takes 1,000 years or more for the CO₂ released from burning fossil fuels to be reabsorbed, resulting in a long-lasting impact on the climate. In contrast, UP Catalyst’s carbon materials are climate-neutral and does not introduce new CO₂ into the atmosphere.
Conventional carbon material production is very energy intensive. Synthetic graphite production consumes 25 MWh/T*, whereas UP Catalyst’s process requires only 15 MWh/T to produce battery-grade graphite. The difference is even more striking for carbon nanotubes: conventional production demands 800 MWh/T**, while UP Catalyst’s process uses just 25 MWh/T. This significant reduction in energy usage makes the process not only more climate-friendly but also more cost-effective.
UP Catalyst’s production does not disturb the landscape, does not require the involuntary resettlement of local communities, and does not release hazardous by-products into water or the atmosphere. Furthermore, we prioritize water conservation by recycling the water used in our operations, ensuring minimal consumption.
